Build on foundational skills with basic tactics and an introduction to strategic principles. Chess is not just a game of pieces, but of possibilities. Every move you make reveals a new path.

Opening Principles:

  1. Control of the center
  2. Developing pieces effectively
  3. Early king safety and castling

Basic Tactics and Patterns:

  1. Recognizing threats and simple captures
  2. Basic tactics: pins, forks, skewers, and discovered attacks
  3. Introduction to simple combinations
  4. Types of Stalemates

Endgame Basics:

  1. Understanding checkmating patterns with major pieces (e.g., king + queen vs. king, king + rook vs. king)
  2. Basic pawn endings (king and pawn vs. king)

Practical Play:

  1. Playing guided games with feedback on mistakes
  2. Simple exercises to reinforce learned concepts

Openings Development:

  1. Fundamental opening repertoires for white and black (e.g., Italian Game, Sicilian Defense basics)
  2. Development and tempo in the opening phase
  3. Capturing the Hanging Piece/Pawn

Opening Repertoire Expansion:

  1. Deepening understanding of common openings (e.g., Ruy Lopez, Sicilian Defense variations, Queen's Gambit)

Principles of opening preparation and responding to opponent's moves

Advanced Tactics:

  1. Complex tactics and combinations
  2. Removing the defender, deflection, decoy tactics
  3. Complex examples of pins, skewers, and forks

Positional Concepts:

  1. Advanced pawn structures (isolated pawns, backward pawns, doubled pawns)
  2. Outposts and weak squares
  3. Good vs. bad bishops, knights vs. bishops dynamics

Planning and Strategy:

  1. Basics of formulating a plan based on the position
  2. Recognizing imbalances and exploiting them
  3. Transitioning between opening, middlegame, and endgame phases

Endgame Strategy:

  1. More advanced rook endgames and concepts (e.g., the Vancura position)
  2. Knight and bishop endgames
  3. Opposition, triangulation, and zugzwang in endgames
